Felting needles explanation:
A felting needle is a needle with notches. The needles come in different thicknesses which are expressed in gauge.
- 32 gauge – is usually called “coarse” and is suitable for making basic shapes. The needle is not suitable for detailed work.
- 32 gauge reverse - a reverse needle has no notches but barbs. With this needle you pull the wool out instead of in. Ideal for making fluffy animals or blending colors.
- 38 gauge star – is usually called “medium” or “medium”. Suitable for creating basic shapes and coarse details. An star felting needle does not have 3 rows of notches (3-sided), but 4 (4-sided). This ensures a faster felting process and the needle does not have to be pierced as deeply into the wool.
- 40 gauge – is usually called ‘fine’. This needle is best used with fine wool and for making details, such as a white dot in an eye.
